Press Release: CIJA Welcomes Government Investment in Programs to Combat Hate Crimes

July 22, 2020

TORONTO, ON— Today, the Government of Ontario announced a $1.7 million investment in community-based programs to combat hate-motivated crimes over the next two years. In partnership with law enforcement, the program will enable eligible not-for-profit organizations to address hate-motivated crime in their communities through awareness programs and improvement of security infrastructure.

In response, Barbara Bank, Chair, CIJA Toronto issued the following:

“The Jewish community and other vulnerable groups collectively spend millions of dollars annually protecting children and families from hate-motivated crime. CIJA welcomes this investment, which will make a meaningful difference in the lives of all Ontarians who visit their local houses of worship or community centres.

It is vital that all levels of government recognize that safety and security should not be a burden on vulnerable groups alone. As Canadians, we must ensure that all communities – no matter their race, religion, sex, or orientation – can carry out their communal activities without fear for their safety.

Today’s announcement follows sustained community advocacy on the issue of community security.  In November, CIJA was joined by dozens of community members at Queen’s Park for an advocacy day focusing on community security and hate, which was followed up by a roundtable discussion with Sylvia Jones, Solicitor General and Minister Responsible for Anti-Racism, and Ontario MPPs Gila Martow, Roman Baber, and Robin Martin in February. We thank all the Members who have listened to our community’s concerns, and look forward to supporting their efforts to combat hate.”
