About Us

Who We Are

The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA) is the advocacy agent of the Jewish Federations of Canada. We are a national, non-partisan, non-profit organization, representing the perspectives of 150,000 Canadian Jews affiliated through local Federations.

Our Mission

To improve the quality of Jewish life in Canada by advancing the public policy interests of Canada’s organized Jewish community.

What We Do

We connect the power of a strong, national network to regional efforts in every Canadian province and, as the Canadian affiliate of the World Jewish Congress, to international efforts worldwide.

We build relationships with leaders in government, media, academia, civil society and other faith and ethnic communities to ensure greater understanding of the issues that impact the Jewish community.

We combat antisemitism and discrimination in all its forms and advocate for fundamental rights and freedoms, social justice, and support for the people of Israel.

What We Really Do

Our team works hard to build support for Canada’s Jewish community on the issues that matter most. Our national and regional lay leaders and staff engage with government, media, and on campus.

On any given day, we might…

  • Host fact-finding missions to Israel for non-Jewish leaders
  • Brief federal, provincial, or municipal elected officials about issues affecting our community
  • Meet with journalists and editors to discuss emerging issues or raise concerns about unfair reporting;
  • Conduct a security audit of a synagogue or day school, and training staff to improve security
  • Give television or radio interviews to provide perspective from our community on breaking stories
  • Write op-eds or letters to the editor to rebut erroneous articles or clarify our position
  • Create web and social media content, including action alert campaigns, to empower Jewish and pro-Israel activists to spread the message online
  • Conduct communications and advocacy training workshops for campus and other activists to be sure they can convey the facts about domestic issues and Israel
  • Meet with university presidents and other senior campus officials to build relationships, discuss challenges facing Jewish students, and communicate our community’s concerns
  • Meet with non-Jewish religious or ethnic leaders to discuss opportunities to advocate together on issues of common cause;
  • Research and writing formal policy submissions to parliamentary committees studying key issues, such as Canada’s Middle East policy, physician-assisted dying, genetic discrimination, or immigration and refugees

Why We Do It

We believe in Canada’s foundational values of freedom, democracy, and equality. We are committed to working with the government and all like-minded groups to ensure that Canada remains a country where all citizens—irrespective of gender, race, or creed—enjoy equal protections and opportunities.

CIJA’s mission to Israel…had a profound impact on my understanding of the Middle East. Just four months [later], I organized a successful initiative to repeal a boycott of Israel at the University of Regina Students’ Union. I’m proud to have done my part to ensure that our student union no longer endorses a blatantly discriminatory boycott campaign. CIJA gave me the tools I needed to make a difference.

— Sean Wilson, Past Representative, University of Regina Students’ Union

The ongoing support we receive from CIJA is invaluable in the work we do on campus. From professional development, to incident management, to beyond-the-conflict programming, CIJA is a partner we rely on.
